Knoxville Hoping for Penny Sales Tax Increase
A question of whether or not to raise sales tax rates in Knox County may appear on the November ballot. The Knox County Board will vote on the matter Wednesday night.

Money generated by tax will go to county schools for capital projects.

Knoxville School District 202 Superintendent Steve Wilder is already planning how they might use the revenue if it is approved.

"The...thing to do with that money, and I think this is important to get out to the public, is not only look at putting that money on the (proposed new all-weather) track, but then paying off some of the costs to the addition at Mabel Woolsey (Elementary School) a little bit earlier than expected," Wilder said, "as well as the life-safety bonds we have in terms of debt."

It is estimated the tax would generate about half a million dollars annually for district 202.

School board members also discussed strategies for passing the referendum.

While elected officials like the board members, cannot directly advocate for the tax, they talked about community involvement and who might be able to run a support campaign.
