Popular GHS Coach Dies Due to Running Bix 7
A Galesburg High School Coach and athletic hall of fame member is dead after participating in a popular Quad Cities road race over the weekend.

A spokesperson for Genesis Medical Center in Davenport says 41-year old John Chapman died there of an apparent heart attack, after being taken off the course of the Quad City Times Bix 7 Road Race.

Chapman, authorities say, collapsed near Brady and 15th Streets in Davenport -- or, about the sixth mile of the seven-mile race. They say EMT's found Chapman unresponsive upon their arrival.

Chapman was the wrestling coach at Galesburg High School, and had numerous local and state accomplishments in that regard while a student athlete himself. He most recently took his wrestlers to a summer wrestling camp in Iowa.

Chapman is survived by his wife Jody and two children. A fund has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank in Galesburg to help pay for the education of the two.

Funeral services for Chapman are Thursday morning at 10 at Corups Christi Catholic Church in Galesburg, a change from its previous location. A visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p-m on Wednesday at Hinchliff Pearson West Galesburg Chapel.
