Rutherford Reacts to Galesburg Mayor Endorsing Opponent
State Senator Dan Rutherford says it doesn't matter much to him that his opponent in the November election for Illinois State Treasurer has been endorsed by Galesburg's top elected official.

REutherford raised money in Galesburg Monday morning, then spoke to reporters, and says it's fine with him that Mayor Sal Garza endorsed Democrat Robin Kelly, a current deputy in the office, for the top job.

Rutherford tells WGIL in fact, he might have counted on it.

"Considering the fact that he's a Democrat hire under the Quinn administration, I would expect that he would endorse a Democrat hire under the Giannoulias administration," Rutherford said. "I respect when elected officials come out and endorse people. But, it's kind of obvious in the fact that they're both Democrat appointees within government payroll, supporting each other."

Garza, who actually was hired while Rod Blagojevich was still governor, said when he endorsed Kelly that he did it as mayor, which is a non-partisan political position, and not as an employee of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Garza, though, also showed up at a campaign event for Democratic Lieutenant Governor candidate Sheila Simon last week.
