| Williamson Appeals Treasurer Candidate Ruling |
Penny Williamson is down but not out according to her.
Williamson filed an appeal Monday in Knox County Circuit Court to the decision knocking her off the Knox County election ballot for treasurer.
The decision came earlier this month from the Knox County Electoral Board, made up of county circuit clerk Kelly Cheesman, Sheriff David Clague, and State's Attorney John Pepmeyer, after some local Democrats challenged Williamson's petitions as an Independent candidate.
After a day long hearing with testimony from both sides, the Electoral Board ruled that Williamson had participated in a Republican caucus in March, which makes her ineligible to run as an Independent.
Williamson's appeal maintains that she did not participate in the meeting because she is not a precinct committeemen, and does not have voting power. The appeal further alleges that the meeting was not properly convened and no resolution was filed with the the county clerk after the meeting.
Williamson has hired a Macomb attorney, Don Weston, to represent her.
No date for a hearing has been set yet. The matter was originally assigned to Judge James Stewart, but he recused himself and it is now in the process of being reassigned.
Williamson has stated from the beginning that she does not believe her hearing was fair because two members of the Electoral Board have signed the nominated petitions of incumbent Treasurer Robin Davis, a Democrat.
