Independent Lt. Gov. Candidate Envisions Zero Unemployment
Baxter Swilley says he has a jobs plan that, if successful, could lead to absolutely no unemployment whatsoever in the State of Illinois.

Swilley is running for Lieutenant Governor on the Independent ticket with Scott Lee Cohen. He spoke with reporters in Galesburg Wednesday, and says he and Cohen have created what they call "All Hands on Deck."

Swilley tells WGIL it's a job training program for, as he puts it, "people left behind."

"We want to ensure that we can grow the gross domestic product of this state, put people back to work, have more income to tax, not tax people more or less income," Swilley said. "We want to ensure people have a job, because I believe that a job is more than a paycheck. It's a source of pride and dignity for anybody that's willing to work for it."

Swilley didn't provide specifics about what job training would be provided, but says he wants to encourage businesses like Wal-Mart to hire more young people, those who are disabled, and even convicted felons who want a chance to clean up their records.

He says that's the only way to bring bring jobs back to the state, not by providing tax incentives.
