School Sales Tax Referendum Approved
Knox County voters will decide in November if they are willing to pay a higher sales tax.

County board members Wednesday night unanimously approved a measure to place the question of the one percent sales tax increase on the election ballot.

School District 205 Superintendent Gene Denisar and school attorney Tom West were on hand to answer questions about the tax.

Revenues from the tax would go to school districts in the county for use of capital construction and buildings.

A few county board members, like Allen Pickrel and Tim Hasten, had concerns that school districts did not have plans for how the money would be used.

Cheryl Nache, however, was quick to point out that the board was only approving the measure be placed on the ballot and it was not a vote in favor or against the tax increase.

Hasten also worried about whether or not the tax could sunset. According to West, the tax can only be removed when no school district in the county has earmarked their share of the revenue to pay for bonds.

Board President Greg Bacon said that was unlikely and it might as well be viewed as an indefinite tax.

All members voted in favor to put the question to voters in November, Hasten was the only "reluctant" yes vote.
