Crops Doing Okay Despite Excess Rain
While the weather has presented some challenges, it has not hurt the crops as much as it has in past years.

Mark Schleusener is the deputy director of the USDA Agricultural Statistics Service in Illinois.

"For this year, we really have not assessed damage to the crop," Schleusener said. "Conditions, as rated by our reporters, are generally good. And, rain makes grain. For the crops that were planted early, corn got off to an excellent start. Basically, it's just drinking up all that rain, and making grain. There are certainly holes in fields where the low spots that flooded and stayed flooded long enough to kill off the crop."

Schleusener says 85 percent of the state reports topsoil moisture as adequate or surplus.

The western portion of the state reports 60 percent adequate topsoil moisture and 39 percent surplus.

89 percent of corn is also silked in this region, that is however, the lowest percentage of all the reporting regions in the state.
