Local Lawmaker Praises State Grants for Galesburg

State Representative Don Moffit says he thinks the city receiving roughly $650,000 that will go toward building a new transit facility, renovating the current station, and equipment including security cameras and other things, is "very good news."

The Gilson Republican tells WGIL he sees the work as part of a much more significant idea.

"That's all part of the big plan of the vision of things we can do right here in Galesburg associated with the railraod both in freight traffic and in passenger traffic by improving the depot and the whole complex."

City officials never returned calls seeking comment after Governor Quinn released the list of transportation-related projects that would receive funding as part of the state's capital construction bill.

Part of the project, the state says, is eligible for federal economic stimulus funding. That's something as recently as the last City Council meeting officials said they weren't sure they'd get, and that the planning was still in the preliminary stages.
