Illinois Scientists Keep Track of Rare Orchid
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) -- Ecologists and volunteers have been keeping track of a rare and endangered type of orchid that grows in a pair of forest preserves in DuPage County.

Botanists and volunteers throughout Illinois have been keeping close tabs over the last several weeks on the Eastern Prairie Fringed Orchid. They're documenting locations and collecting plant data.

The white-blossomed flowers bloom in late June, but by mid-July they're already gone. The plants can reach 3-feet tall and have as many as 40 flowers.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been trying to restore the plant population for more than ten years and federal officials say their efforts are working.

Populations of the flower also have been found in Kane and McHenry counties.
