Economic Recovery in Illinois Still Slow
The story of Illinois' economic recovery is going to be a long one, if the Flash Index is any indication.

The index, a weighted measure of corporate earnings, personal income, and retail sales, is at 91.3 for June.

That's up seven-tenths of one percent from the month before, but still well below the 100 that would indicate the break-even between growth and contraction.

Fred Geirtz, an economics professor with the University of Illinois' Institute of Government and Public Affairs, says people should be careful with their money and know how to protect based on their own circumstances.

"It all depends. If you have only $10,000 [to invest], be very careful if you put it in a money market fund," Giertz said. "If it's $10,000 in addition to some substantial other resources, then, I think it would probably be a good time to put it in the stock market. It depends where you are, and what that $10,000 means to you."

Geirtz adds that Amerians used to good times -- with about five percent unemployment -- have a long wait. Illinois' 10.8% rate is more than a percentage point above the national rate.
