Former Gas Station Could Become Galesburg Property
Another property in the vicinity of the old Regency Hotel on North Henderson Street could soon become city property.

The Galesburg City Council Tuesday will consider purchasing 3200 North Henderson Street from the Knox County Trustee for the low cost of $650. City officials say it's cheaper to purchase the property through the trustee than to go through with foreclosure proceedings.

The city demolished the former Gulf Oil station in the fall of 2008, but a letter to the council indicates the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has yet to remove the underground fuel storage tanks at the site, but as of last month, intends to do so, now that an environmental study has been done.

It's not clear what the city would do with the site, but had the council gone through with plans they later dashed to sell other properties in that vicinity, it could have been sold to an as-yet unnamed developer that reportedly expressed interest in that area, and wanted to possibly build new on the Regency site.

The Galesburg City Council meets at 6:30pm Tuesday inside council chambers at City Hall.
