Quinn: Overall Cuts Matter More Than Staff Raises
CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is defending pay raises given to his staff even though the state is awash in debt.

An AP analysis of records obtained under the Freedom of Information Act found that the Democrat has given 43 salary increases averaging 11.4 percent since taking office.

Quinn says raises were deserved -- and offset by a 25 percent cut in office costs and that taxpayers only care about the "bottom line" of spending.

His staff said earlier there's been a 10 percent cut in the governor's office with another 25 percent reduction planned for this year.

Quinn has championed "shared sacrifice" and announced that he plans spending cuts of $1.4 billion because of the state's debt.
