Kirk: Giannoulias Needs to Pay Taxes
U.S. Senate candidate Mark S. Kirk says his opponent should find a way to pay taxes.

State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, the Democratic candidate for Senate, sustained $2.7 million in losses from his family's bank last year, and as a result paid no income tax, despite drawing a salary of $119,000 from the state.

Kirk, the Republican candidate, says this is a political issue. "The thought of someone who's worth over $7 million not paying any income tax is not dishonest, but distasteful," he said.

Kirk says anyone who draws a salary from the government should find a way to pay taxes, and that even goes for State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington), the Republican candidate for governor, who paid no income tax due to business losses. Kirk says the difference between the two, though, is that Brady is for cutting taxes, whereas Giannoulias is for allowing the Bush-era tax cuts to expire, which strictly speaking is a tax increase.

A Giannoulias spokesman says that Giannoulias has previously paid significant amounts of money in taxes.

Kirk also was asked whether Jason Plummer, the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, should reveal his tax returns. Kirk said he believes all candidates for statewide office should do so.
