State Police Probe Letters About Child's Death
STREATOR, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois State Police says it is investigating letters mailed in the Streator area claiming to have information on the 2003 kidnapping and murder of Dalton Mesarchik.

Authorities say copies of the have been mailed to individual, businesses and governmental entities.

Investigators are asking recipients of a letter concerning the murder to minimize handling and relay it to local law enforcement.

Police will not release information about the contents of the letter that relates to the Mesarchik case and other criminal acts.

Seven-year-old Dalton Mesarchik was abducted from his front yard in Streator on March 26, 2003. A fisherman found his body in the Vermilion River the next day.

An autopsy showed the boy was beaten to death with a 3-pound sledgehammer that could only be purchased at a Kmart.
