Abingdon Tackles Sewer Backups
Abingdon residents who have fallen victim in recent months to sewer backups thanks to all the heavy rains we've had are soon close to, at the very least, some temporary relief.

Mayor Roger Stegall told the Abingdon City Council Tuesday night that Roto Rooter has been in town, and last week spent time televising some of the city's storm sewers following residents' repeated complaints of flooded basements, and he says they've found several instances of what are called "root balls" blocking the sewer lines in several locations.

Stegall told aldermen he hopes the sewer inspection and some high-pressure cleaning will provide some relief.

"If anybody asks you about what we are doing, we have started on this project," Stegall said. "We found out quite a few things down there. It was very interesting."

Stegall says, however, if you're an affected resident, don't stat jumping for joy yet.

"I don't think this will solve the problem, but it's going to help it a lot," Stegall said.

Stegall says Roto-Rooter only inspected the sewer in the four worst areas of Abingdon -- parts of Palmer, Jackson, Cedar, and McClure Streets.

He says the inspection determined tree roots permeated the sewer in some areas that would make it the homeowner's responsibility to fix, so they will be notified.

A more long-term solution is being worked on to address the overall sewer system.
