Abingdon City Council Working on Pay Scales
Details have yet to be worked out, but some Abingdon city employees could soon be getting pay raises.

Alderman Myron Hovind is the chair of the City Council's budget committee, and told council members this week it's working out the final details of a revamp of the city's pay scales, some of which haven't been touched outside of minimum wage increases for a long time.

Hovind says part of the problem is that the pay scales for some positions don't mark how long employees have actually worked with the city.

"We've got a number of years that only went to 10. We're changing that," Hovind said. "We've got a lot of people who have been here -- one I know of 29 years, and she's still at the 10 year wage scale. So, we are making some changes."

Hovind says some T's need to be crossed and some I's dotted before the work is finalized, however.

He says the budget committee will have to have another meeting before the city council can vote.

Mayor Roger Stegall says the wage scales have needed to be revamped for "quite some time."
