Abingdon City Council Questions Membership in Western Illinois Regional Council
Well over a year has passed since the City of Abingdon first applied for a grant that would pay for the demolition of several downtown buildings that are in disrepair, and the group that helped the city apply may end up being out of a job.

The Abingdon City Council this week talked about whether it would be worth it to continue their membership in the Western Illinois Regional Council. Mayor Roger Stegall says the annual membership costs the city just under $2,000, but members questions if they've gotten their money's worth.

Stegall says one option is to discontinue membership, but use the WIRC as needed.

"I've talked to the lady in Avon that handles this, and Avon does not pay a membership to the WIRC anymore," Stegall said. "They pay per grant. If the WIRC puts in a grant...Avon pays a fee for that particular grant."

Aldermen wonder, however, if they needed to apply for a number of grants, if it would be worth it to pay by the grant.

Some suggested the city will need all the help it can get with grants now that it will be one of the main ways it looks at paying for revamping its sewer system.

More discussion could happen July 19th.
