Kohl's: We Want to Help Community
An official with the newest department store chain to come to Galesburg says it will be a positive for the entire community, not just for the store.

Kohl's received plenty of both comments and criticism this week from residents and the Galesburg City Council as an incentive-based deal was approved bringing the store to the Seminary Square Shopping Center.

But Kohl's real estate manager Mark Lee says no matter how you feel about the chain, it's committed to helping the community.

Lee says a national-based program is an example of that.

"We have 'Kohl's Cares' merchandise that we sell, that 100% of that profit is donated to kids' health and education," Lee said. "Since we started the program, $180 million has been generated to those kids' health and education projects."

Lee says as for criticism that such a new store could drive other retailers out of town -- such as Galesburg's Sandburg Mall, or drive down business at retail behemoth Wal-Mart -- it's always been the company's philosophy that their presence will force competitors to do better, not worse.

Kohl's will open up next Fall, after a spring ground-breaking.
