Major Department Store Coming to Galesburg
City officials have scored what could be described as a major economic development victory with the announcement of a major department store chain coming to Galesburg.

The city announced late Thursday afternoon that the city and Kohl's have come to a tentative agreement that would see the store locate in the Seminary Square shopping center.

A city press release indicates that an incentive package was offered to Kohl's so they would locate here -- one similar to the types of deals worked out in other recent locations they've opened up at.

The Galesbug City Council is expected to vote on that at their meeting moved to Tuesday night due to the July 4th holiday.

Mayor Sal Garza praised the city's economic development staff for working on this plan, which he says the city has been trying to achieve since 2007. A survey in 2008 indicated that Milwaukee-based Kohl's was one of the top stores residents wanted in town.

Garza says the city has experienced what's termed as retail leakage for years, and the opening of Kohl's slated for the fall of 2012, and Dunham's sports in the coming months, will help stem that.

55 full-time equivalent jobs are expected to be created when the environmentally-friendly store opens. A ground-breaking is set to be held next Spring.
