Moffitt Pleased With Capital Bill Ruling
One local lawmaker is more than a little pleased with the Illinois Supreme Court.

The state's high court Monday ruled that the legislature's Capital construction plan didn't violate state law and deal with multiple topics instead of just one. That means myriad road, bridge, and other construction projects planned statewide can continue unabated.

State Representative Don Moffitt says had the legislature needed to fix the plan somehow, that would have been bad news.

"If there's a delay, it's an added inconvenience for the citizens of Illinois for projects that take longer," Moffitt said. "Then, we lose the benefit of those construction jobs had there been a ruling against this. On top of that, any delay, if we lose a construction season, it could easily drive costs even higher, which would be a loss to the taxpayers."

The capital construction bill also included money for the City of Galesburg's rail crossing grade separation projects. Ground on the first one -- the overpass at West Main Street -- is to be broken in a few weeks.

City officials, however, did not respond to requests for comment Monday.
