Abingdon School Board Takes Stand on Liquor License
If it were up to the Abingdon School Board, a liquor store wouldn't be opening up any time soon in an area near Hedding Grade School.

The District-217 board Wednesday night voted to issue an official statement on the matter, saying that a liquor license shouldn't have been given to the owners of the former "Wareco" gas station. The issue sparked fireworks between City Clerk Sheila Day and Mayor Roger Stegall, claiming it would be illegal for the store to open up that close to a school.

Superintendent David Black tells WGIL he understands why the board felt it necessary to take a stand on an issue that wouldn't normally matter to the district.

"School Board members are members of the community as well," Black said. "And, livingin a community, especially in a small community, you run into neighbors, you run into friends, who've all kept up with the media and heard radio reports or perhaps read a newspaper, and heard what was going on with the City Council."

The full statement can be read at the District-217 school district website, www.abingdon.k12.il.us.

The District-217 board did vote to re-hire five aides that had been reduced in the spring due to state budget cuts.

The board also approved a plan for construction of an actual TV studio in support of several classes related to that at the high school, and they voted to approve a new contract for Hedding Grade School principal Michelle Andrews.
