Heat Starting to Stress IL Crops
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois' corn and soybean crops remain mostly in good condition but the state Department of Agriculture says that some are starting to show the stress of high heat and little rain. And pastures in some areas have started to turn brown.

The department says that better than 60 percent of the state's corn crop is in good to excellent shape. That's according to a weekly report Monday.

But University of Illinois agricultural economist Darrel Good says that this year's corn production could drop with hotter-than-usual weather setting in.

Good says corn in the country's Corn Belt tends to be at its best when July temperatures are a below average and rain about 25 percent above average.

He says that deep concern wouldn't start until late July and into August.
