Reaction to GOP Lawsuit Over New Legislative Remap
CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn's office is defending the state's new Democratic-drawn legislative district map after top Republican lawmakers sued to invalidate it.

Quinn's office said Wednesday the map for state House and Senate districts "represents our diverse state and protects the voting rights of minorities." Quinn is out of the country on a trip to Israel.

Earlier Wednesday, top Republican lawmakers sued the state in federal court contending the new map shortchanges blacks and Latinos and dilutes the voting strength of Republicans.

Democrats drew the map that Quinn signed into law last month because they control the General Assembly and the governor's office.

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund says it's still studying the state map and the Republicans' lawsuit before it decides what action to take.
