Historians Confirm Lincoln Spoke in Kewanee
CHICAGO (AP)--Historians say they can confirm Abraham Lincoln spoke in a northwestern Illinois community during the 1858 U.S. Senate campaign.

Kewanee residents have long been confident Lincoln did speak in the town that year, but the dates became confused over the decades and led to some doubts.

But researchers say the evidence Lincoln spoke in Kewanee is in a letter from Lincoln on October 18, 1858, where he tells acquaintances he's forgotten the name of the place he'll speak.

By cross-checking other sources, researchers showed Lincoln had to have stayed the night in Kewanee on October 27 that year and then spoke to a group the next day.

The research was done by Stark County Historical Society, the Kewanee Historical Society and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
