Conference Convened to Review Child Development
OAK LAWN, Ill. (AP) -- Researchers and policymakers are meeting to review the latest developments in child development research.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is co-sponsoring the meeting with Gov. Pat Quinn's Office of Early Childhood Development. They are working with Casey Family Programs.

Wednesday's conference was intended to ensure child welfare and other state social service agencies are considering groundbreaking research in the field when making decisions about helping children in need.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Jack Shonkoff. He is director of Harvard University's Center on the Developing Child. Shonkoff's research shows that prolonged exposure to stressful events without caring adults affects developing brain circuits and hormonal systems.
