Work Finally Begins on W. Main Overpass
The walls are tumbling down, and pretty soon it will be time to do actual construction for the first of three rail crossing grade separations planned for Galesburg.

City Public Works Director Larry Cox says demolition is ongoing on the buildings on West Main purchased in order to be torn down to make way for the overpass there.

Cox tells the WGIL Morning News the creation of essentially a new street will be next up on the list.

"The main priority is to get that connecting street, between Maple Street and Garfield, constructed," Cox said. "Once that is constructed, the main focus will be on building the embankment that will raise the road up over the railroad tracks. So that's what they'll be working on this fall and trying to get completed before the weather gets too bad."

As for the demolition, Cox says there are still some asbestos issues to be worked out, and some parts of at least some of the buildings are harder to tear down than first thought.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 July 29th. We'll have live coverage on WGIL and WGIL.com.
