KHS Expansion Plans Given the Once-Over
The Superintendent of the Knoxville School District says he's optimistic the district will receive the millions of dollars it asked for almost 10 years ago, in order to fund an expansion of Knoxville High School.

Stephen Wilder was on hand Tuesday when the state's Capital Development Board paid a visit, looking over plans for the expansion that will see more classrooms, a common area, and a second gym, now that the District-202 Board Monday picked the site plan of choice.

The visit was necessary because the state's years-behind school construction grant program is paying for it all, and Wilder tells WGIL there were some specific plans the CDB looked at.

"The two things that they really look at during the site visit are the number of classrooms where students can be receiving instruction," Wilder said. "Then they look at how the project would tie into municipal utilities -- electric, gas, sewer, sanitation... My understanding is that their goal is to make sure enough planning enough planning is in place that the project is ready to move forward."

Wilder says he believes the site visit was really good, and that the board gave him every indication that they hope to make grant awards toward the end of the summer.

If the award is made, Wilder says more formal site plans will start to take shape, but any expansion won't start taking place until next year.
