Suspicious Device Halts Amtrak Train in Dodge City
DODGE CITY, Kan. (AP) -- Passengers on an Amtrak train from Los Angeles to Chicago had a long layover in southwestern Kansas after someone spotted a suspicious device in a sleeping car.

Dodge City Police Chief Craig Mellecker says a passenger reported the device to the conductor, who reported it to police.

The train was stopped in Dodge City around 1:30 a.m. Friday and all 245 passengers were evacuated to the Ford County Government Center, where the Salvation Army provided food and beverages.

The Dodge City Daily Globe reports a Kansas Highway Patrol bomb squad rendered the device harmless. Authorities say no explosive material was found.

Passengers reboarded the Southwest Chief around 7 a.m. and the train resumed its eastbound trip. Amtrak officials thanked the Dodge City community for taking care of the passengers during the unexpected stop.
