DNR Stresses Boat Safety
(IRN) -- Summer is in full swing and people are out on the water. That means it's time for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to warn people about the water's hazards.

DNR Spokesman Joe Morelock says the waterways will be full, and many people piloting a boat don't know how to operate it properly. He says many boaters forget simple rules, some of which are no different than those for cars.

"The vessel to the right, or approaching from the right, has the right of way," he says. "When you're approaching oncoming vessels, obviously you're to veer right as well. Those are two of the main laws that we see violated."

Morelock says the best way to avoid accidents on the waterways is to be observant of your surroundings. He says open alcohol is allowed on moving boats, but not if it's consumed by the driver. He says DUI rules are the same on the water as they are on the roads.

The DNR says it's increasing patrols for the Fourth of July weekend to crack down on intoxicated boaters.
