Fulton Co. Nursing Home Closing Over Late State Payments
ASTORIA, Ill. (AP) -- The administrator of a west-central Illinois nursing home says the facility will close next week because of late payments from the state.

Steve Axelbaum says Astoria Gardens and Rehab Center has had to wait six months to receive its payments.

He says "nothing can survive in this environment."

Axelbaum tells the (Peoria) Journal Star that arrangements are being made to move the home's 35 residents to other facilities in the area. But he says the move is hard on residents, many of them in their 80s and 90s.

The home, which has been in business for about a decade, employs about 40 people.

Illinois has a multibillion-dollar budget deficit. The state has dealt with the fiscal crisis, in part, by delaying payments to agencies.
