Relay for Life Participants Celebrate Despite the Heat
UPDATED WITH FUNDRAISING TOTALS 11:35am 7/23/11 Friday night was a good night to party on the Knox College campus in Galesburg, despite heat and humidity leaving the area feel like over 100 degrees at times.

That's because over 400 celebrated cancer survivors while remembering those who gave it their all as part of the Knox County Relay for Life, which wrapped up at 8am Saturday.

$129,000 out of a $150,000 goal has been raised, which organizers say they're just fine with. But no matter how much is raised, the American Cancer Society's Stacey Dutton says that money will be spent responsibly, with 94-cents of every dollar raised staying in the area.

"To make sure as much of our money as possible goes directly to funding more cancer research, or helping our patients directly through our patient services program," Dutton said, "whether they need a ride to treatment, they need a free wig, or they want to take part in a 'Look Good, Feel Better' session right here in Knox County.

Dutton says roughly 180 people in Illinois find out that they have cancer every day, and that the state has its own research program.

The American Cancer Society works with roughly 30,000 statewide -- or, about 80 people a day.
