Watchdog Group Says More Hill Prison Staff Needed
GALESBURG, Ill (AP)-- A report by the John Howard Association of Illinois indicates the Henry C. Hill Correctional Center is understaffed and overcrowded.

The group found that prison staff believes inadequate security presence has created heightened pressure and instability for inmates and staff, and increased opportunities for violence. Hill was designed to hold 896 inmates, but when the prison watchdog staff visited the prison on May 31, it held 1,830 inmates.

The Department of Corrections has acknowledged the ratio of inmates to security staff at the prison is higher than at any other Illinois medium security prison. However, corrections officials did not respond to watchdog group's report when contacted by the Register-Mail in Galesburg.

Republican state Rep. Don Moffitt of Gilson credits the staff at Hill for keeping the prison running relatively smoothly.
