Heat Affecting Illinois Livestock
(IRN) -- This is according to county farm offices that have heard of at least some livestock deaths in the state that could be heat-related, though their reports to the USDA aren't specific as to where, when, and what types of animals.

State veterinarian Dr. Mark Ernst says the conditions certainly existed to stress the livestock to the point of death. "I think so, because we had high temperatures as well as high humidity," he said. "They're not able to cool themselves as well as if the humidity were lower so I think the combination of those two factors really came into play."

Even for summer, the weather has been hotter than normal, 8 degrees above average last week.

Ernst says farmers should make sure their swine and cattle have plenty of water and are in a well-ventilated location, and they shouldn't be moved during the hottest part of the day.
