Unemployment in Knox County Takes Sharp Jump
FIRST REPORTED 3:00pm 7/28/11 More people looking for work locally, but the state is still looking at the bright side.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security says the June Unemployment rate for the City of Galesburg, just out today, put the jobless average here at 8.4%, up six-tenths from the month of May.

The increase, though, is only 100 people in town compared to the month prior, with 1,200 listed as jobless out of a labor force of 15,100.

Knox County's jobless average is at 7.7% -- also up six-tenths from May, and now just over 2,000 out of work.

Meantime, in Warren County, their unemployment rate went up 1.3%, going to 7.5%.

Combine the Knox and Warren County numbers, and you get a Galesburg-area Unemployment rate that is sitting at 7.7%.

The state says the June Unemployment rate is the lowest it's been in 3 years in each of the state's metropolitan areas.

Year-over-year, the state says the Galesburg area lost 325 non-farm payroll jobs.

Education-Health Services and Government were the biggest decliners.
