Quinn: "Very Serious" for IL if Debt Ceiling Not Raised
(IRN) -- Gov. Pat Quinn says the state would definitely feel the effects of a failure to increase the debt ceiling.

Quinn says it is likely Medicaid reimbursements to the state from the federal government would be held up. Medicaid program is a 50-50 program between the state and the federal government, and if the federal government can’t pay its half it's going to cause great travail," Quinn said.

The governor is also worried about public safety. Things like inspections of the state's nuclear plants could be affected. "We have 11 nuclear power plants here in Illinois and we have federal investigations and inspections and so on," Quinn said.

Education is another area that could get hit. The state receives billions in federal money to help fund public schools.

Asked if he thinks the federal government will default, Quinn says it "would be a very serious matter" if it happened but says he doesn't think it will.
