Alzheimers Association Memory Walk to Change Name
An event in its 19th year in Galesburg is getting a bit of a makeover and a shift in focus.

The Central Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimers Association has hosted a Memory Walk in Galesburg for Knox and Warren Counties, but now the organization says the name is being changed to the Walk to End Alzheimers.

Association spokesperson Janet Veach tells WGIL the reason for the name change is simple.

"We want to emphasize the Alzheimers Association's active role in raising awareness and concern," Veach said.

Veach tells WGIL the name change was also due to the fact that she says Alzheimers disease -- a form of dementia -- has a stigma attached to it.

"I think we wanted to...have a name change that showed us to be more proactive and more engaged in finding an end to Alzheimers, and raising awareness, and getting more people involved," Veach said.

There are an estimated 210,000 people in Illinois with Alzheimers disease, and in the 20-county region the Central Illinois Alzheimers Association chapter represents, Veach says there are as many as 22,000.

In addition to just the walk scheduled for September 24th at Hawthorne Center, Veach says there will be some other new activities.
