Local Red Cross Director Steps Down
The Western Illinois chapter of the American Red Cross needs a new director.

Carrie Bernett stepped down from her role Thursday after three years in the Galesburg office, and will become the new director of Marketing and Public Relations for OSF Saint Mary Medical Center.

Bernett tells WGIL while she looks forward to being able to use more of her expertise at Saint Mary's, she'll not soon forget her time at the Red Cross.

"This job is a very stressful job," Bernett said. "But it's so rewarding in the end, just feeling that you're helping people, and knowing that the Red Cross is there to help them out."

And Bernett says that help continues to be needed now more than ever. A push continues for more blood donations, for example -- something she says tends to decline a lot during the summer months.

Bernett replaces Shannon Jansen at Saint Mary's, and replaced former State Senator Carl Hawkinson at the Red Cross.

Bernett says the Red Cross' Board of Directors is currently looking for a replacement for her, and should hopefully have one in a couple of months.
