Hundreds in Chicago Support Protesters in Syria
CHICAGO (AP) -- Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Chicago to support the anti-government movement in Syria and urge protesters there to continue their uprising against President Bashar Assad.

The Chicago Tribune reports the gathering Sunday attracted about 500 people who lined sidewalks and held signs with messages such as "Stop Genocide." Leaders of local Syrian and Islamic organizations say Assad is at war with his own country.

Yaser Tabbara, executive director of the Syrian American Council, told the crowd "we are here to tell the world that we stand behind our brothers and sisters."

Syrian forces on Sunday carried out arrests in the western city of Hama, an opposition stronghold. The arrests came two days after some 300,000 protesters gathered in Hama in the largest demonstration yet in a three-month-old uprising.
