City Council to Vote on Kohl's Deal
The Galesburg City Council will vote Tuesday night on a deal that essentially provides tax breaks to a major retailer that wants to come to town.

Aldermen Tuesday will vote on what is being called an economic development agreement with Menonemee Falls, Wisconsin-based Kohl's so that they'll bring one of their stores to the Seminary Square Shopping Center in Galesburg.

Documents sent to the City Council indicate that the city is willing to give $1.2 Million in sales tax rebates to Kohl's over time, at a rate based on one percent of their annual sales. And, Kohl's would also get $50,000 in sales tax reimbursement for construction materials purchased in Galesburg.

City officials say they've been pursuing Kohl's since 1997, and that they've looked at two sites along U.S. 34 interchanges in the city, along with what they would only say are "two vacant buildings along Henderson Street."

The equivalent of 55 full-time jobs are expected to be created when Kohl's breaks ground next Spring and opens in the fall.

The city also believes that other retail development will follow now that Kohl's has committed.

The Galesburg City Council meets at 6:30pm Tuesday in council chambers at City Hall.
