Regional Superintendents Start Jobs, Lose Salaries
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Regional superintendents across Illinois are being sworn in for new terms on the same day the state budget eliminates their salaries.

Gov. Pat Quinn made last-minute budget cuts that include chopping more than $11 million for regional offices of education. The cuts take effect Friday, the same day that regional superintendents begin new four-year terms.

Regional superintendents certify teachers, oversee school inspections, run GED programs and more. The Quinn administration suggests local school districts should pay for those services instead of the state.

Peoria County Superintendent Gerald Brookhart says Quinn cut the salaries with no warning -- "like a thief in the night."

Brookhart says he'll continue working even if he doesn't get paid, but he expects the cuts to be challenged in court.
