Kohl's Vote Sparks Building Debate
Discussion by the Galesburg City Council about the deal that's bringing retailer Kohl's to town resulted in another discussion or area of concern for aldermen.

Aldermen Monday night wondered, for one, why Kohl's didn't want to use an existing building for their store, and why the city's business attraction efforts couldn't center on the city's downtown.

It's the concern over downtown that was at the top of the mind of Fifth Ward Alderman Peter Schwartzman, in light of the fact that Kohl's wants to locate in Seminary Square.

"I caution this...further development of the north side of town, may have impacts -- maybe negative imapacts on the downtown area," Schwartzman said.

Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza insists that downtown Galesburg isn't being forgotten.

"There's been a very assertive effort for the continued development of the downtown district," Garza said. "We've been very assertive to try to bring a balance there. In terms of the concern, it's always going to be a concern."

Garza said there are some "pending projects" involving Sandburg Mall as well, that could address another resident's concern that the businesses there would be adversely affected by Kohl's.
