Knoxville Liquor Ordinance Close to Reality
There is still one hurdle to cross before the City of Knoxville officially drops its long-standing status as a dry town.

The Knoxville City Council Tuesday night voted to approve the city's new liquor license ordinance -- this, following the vote in April to lift what essentially was prohibition inside Knoxville city limits, at least from a sales perspective.

Mayor Pro Tem Bernadine Fleisher tells WGIL the only thing left to do now is come up with an application for a liquor license.

"As soon as we have that -- and I would anticipate probably within a week -- then the council will look at that, approve it," Fleisher said. "We will, the way our ordinance is set up, we will have a liquor commissioner. We will not have a liquor commission."

That will be the City's Mayor, whoever that person may be. Fleisher says one business has already installed coolers in anticipation of being able to sell liquor, but it will be at least two weeks before the application is approved.

Aldermen Tuesday night also formally approved the $1.3 million sewer plant upgrades by okaying an intent to award the project.

The council also approved paying for the relining of more manholes in the city's sewer system.
