ROE's Hopeful for Salary Restoration
(IRN) -- They may not prefer to work for free, but the 44 regional school superintendents in Illinois hope Gov. Pat Quinn will reinstate their salaries within 30 days.

Bob Daiber, the superintendent of the Madison County Regional Office of Education and president of the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools, says his group has come away optimistic from a meeting with the governor's staff.

Quinn began the state’s fiscal year July 1 by cutting the regional superintendents' salaries, hoping they'd be funded some other way.

He also reneged on a deal to give 2 percent raises to 30,000 union-represented state employees, a decision which is headed to arbitration. "We're happy to go to the arbitrator, but the law is pretty clear," says the governor. "Subject to appropriations and the decision by the legislature on how much to appropriate, will determine the budget -- the personnel budgets -- of these departments."
