Union Condemns Quinn for Wanting to Cancel Raises
SPRINGFIELD, Ill (AP) -- A major union is condemning Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn for wanting to cancel raises for thousands of state workers.

The American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees on Friday called Quinn's actions "illegal and irresponsible."

AFSCME Council 31 executive director Henry Bayer says in a statement that the union will "pursue every available legal recourse."

Quinn wants to ditch the raises to help cope with the Illinois budget crisis.

His administration notified 14 state agencies and employee unions that the 2 percent raises won't be paid as required by contract because lawmakers did not include enough money in the new state budget.

Quinn spokeswoman Mica Matsoff says canceling the raises would affect nearly 30,000 employees and save the state more than $75 million.
