District-205 Cuts Costs on Renovation Project
One part of the Galesburg School District's Master Facilities Plan has gone over budget, but it didn't stay that way for very long.

The district's Master Facilities Plan committee Thursday met and heard that renovations planned for Steele Elementary School went about a half-million dollars over budget. The plans had included things like skylights, a new exterior, and a new gym.

Some of that will stay, but architect Paul Kouri says some has to go.

"The amount of information at this stage is much greater than what we had at the end of schematic design," Kouri said. "Because we have so much more information, Russel is able to take those drawings and specifications and go out to contractors and get real numbers, and get a much more detailed cross estimate."

Kouri was referring to Davenport-based Russell Construction, the firm in charge of the project. He says skylights, for example, will now become an alternate in the bid package, basketball equipment will be re-used, and things like the number of sinks in restrooms will have to be reduced.

But storage space for teachers won't. Some storage areas that had been listed as bid alternates will stay, as teachers urged more storage space so they can have more room in their classrooms.
