County Health Officials Gearing Up to Transform Community
After briefly pausing to catch their breath, Knox County health officials are campaigning to inform the community exactly what they achieved last month.

An award of more than $595,000 was granted to the health department on June 20th-- triggered by reform in health care law. Following Thursday night's Board of Health meeting, Administrator Heidi Britton told WGIL there's now a responsibility to explain what the FQHC status means.

"How will this really transform the community-- there will be jobs created, yes," Britton asked. "But, I think the most important part will be the quality of care that we'll be able to give, the expansion of services that we'll be able to provide, and the expansion of (the) client-base we can take."

Britton says the health department won't act too quickly in hiring the ten to twelve additional staff members she noted a month ago.

Officials have until October 6th to be compliant with most of the nineteen regulations mandated by the Health Resources and Services Administration. However, Britton says the funds are already there for them to pull-- only accounts need to opened.

In the meantime, she says an electronic record vendor will be chosen, they'll become a Medicare provider, and more community outreach will be provided.

In other news Thursday night, Doctors Kevin Satisky and Bruce Bobofchak were seated to replace outgoing health board members Tommy West and Lance Renfroe.
