| City Council Starts Pot Ordinance Discussion Tonight |
The Galesburg City Council Monday night will start discussing a proposed ordinance that some may consider controversial, but is one that an alderman says makes perfect sense. Aldermen Monday will discuss on first reading the city's proposed ordinance making an administrative ticket a possible penalty for possessing small amounts of marijuana, though depending on the circumstance, state criminal charges could still instead be filed. 7th Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin came up with the idea, calling it another tool in the toolbox of law enforcement, and tells WGIL a working group that was formed by the mayor helped the ordinance along.
"There are some airing out of concerns, making sure that everyone was on board," Karlin said. "As well as, there was an addition of a preamble in our ordinance that made clear though the reasons we were passing this ordinance."
Karlin says, though, he learned something through crafting this ordinance: don't always expect things to get done right away.
"I have to temper my enthusiasm with patience, and so there's a way that we do things," Karlin added. "And when you're talking about an ordinance that has the potential for misunderstanding, there's a way of doing it."
Because the item is on first reading, it's likely no vote on the matter will be taken Monday. Aldermen, however, will consider the purchase of a number of city squad cars and a utility vehicle when they convene at 6:30 Monday evening inside council chambers at Galesburg CIty Hall. |
