39-year-old Appointed as Next Abingdon Chief
A successor to retiring Police Chief Fred Andrews has been selected in Abingdon.

The City Council Monday night approved Mayor Roger Stegall's appointment of 39-year-old Jerry Roberts to head the department. Alderman Sam Burgess and Ronnie Stambaugh abstained from voting.

Roberts has been on the force for eleven years, the past three as lieutenant. His reign as Chief of Police begins Friday.

"I'm very, very excited-- nervous a little bit, (I) got big shoes to fill," Roberts said. "I'm just looking forward to the future, keep doing what Chief Andrews has been doing and improve upon it."

Meanwhile, Andrews is retiring. Mayor Stegall wasn't alone in singing praises to the 62-year-old one final time last night.

"It has been a real pleasure for me, Fred, to work with you," Stegall said. "You have done an excellent, excelled job. I appreciate it--" residents then broke in with a round of applause to acknowledge Andrews' term as chief.

Now that a new police chief has been named, council members will next turn their attention towards replacing Alderman Burgess.

He resigned from his First-Ward post Monday evening-- fulfilling a promise he made last month. Burgess says he's couldn't successfully resolve residency issues he faced within his ward.
