Possible New Lease on Life for Zephyr Dome
The Galesburg School District may have a new use for the so-called "Zephyr Dome" after all.

The District-205's Master Facilities Plan Subcommittee on the former Lombard College Gym determined Monday that of the options available to them for what to do with the building, converting it into an open-air amphitheater seems the most appealing.

Architects say the building would essentially be gutted and the roof removed, but walls and trusses would stay. It's an option that District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Guy Cahill says people may find appealing.

"There is no such gathering space, if you will, of a community kind of nature on that side of town," Cahill said.

District-205 Board member Barry Swanson says that also have a benefit for the school district.

"I like the idea that we would still maintain some control of it," Swanson said. "I like the idea of working with the city on a project where we can bring something to that side of town."

Swanson was referring to a meeting district officials say they want to have with city officials to see if the city has any joint interest in the property.

The district could end up paying as much as four-hundred-thousand dollars for any renovation work done. The district tried to tear the building down four-years ago but Regional Superintendent of Schools Bonnie Harris never acted on the proper building permit.
