City Makes Big Squad Car Purchase
The Galesburg City Council is making what could be considered a big stride toward updating its police department fleet.

Aldermen this week approved purchasing over a half-dozen new squad cars from a Springfield Ford dealership known for supplying state police and other agencies, at a cost of around $180,000-dollars.

The city is opting not to trade in any of the departing vehicles, with some getting sent to other city departments.

A detailed document explaining why the city wants the vehicles, and the conditions of the current squad car fleet was given to aldermen. First Ward Alderman Ken Goad liked that.

"And I hope that it continues each year, that you come to the council if (you) need to replace vehicles, or whatever it is," he said. "Give us whatever information you may have because it helps us to make a better decision."

The City Council in past years has criticized and sometimes even rejected vehicle purchases for various departments.

City officials say in this case, two local dealers did bid on the purchase of squad cars, but one didn't meet bid specifications.

The new squad cars should become available in the next couple months.
